After serving in prison outreach, a rehabilitation ministry, and on staff at the Pennsylvania Bureau of Corrections during the 1970’s, Marion Spellman founded Peniel in 1980. Marion vowed to let God use her to help redeem men and women from drug-and-alcohol addiction, with the hope of rescuing her own brother, who later died tragically from severe substance abuse.
The name Peniel, which means “face of God,” comes from Genesis 32:30, where the patriarch Jacob declared, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Now in its fourth decade, Peniel has served thousands of men and women and their families from nearly ever state as well as foreign countries.
